हेटौडा (Hetauda)

Hetauda (हेटौडा) is a sub-metropolitan city in Makwanpur District, Bagmati Province, Nepal. It lies at the junction of major national highways and serves as the administrative headquarters of Makwanpur as well as the capital of Bagmati Province. The city is noted for its greenery, growing industries, and role as a transport and trade hub.

Key facts

  • Country: Nepal
  • Province / District: Bagmati Province, Makwanpur District
  • Status: Sub-metropolitan city and provincial capital
  • Approx. elevation: ~300–450 m above sea level
  • Population (2021 census): Around 150,000 in the sub-metropolitan area

Geography and climate

Hetauda lies in a valley (doon) between the Mahabharat Range to the north and the Siwalik (Chure) Hills to the south. Three rivers—Rapti, Samari, and Karra—form natural boundaries around the city.

The climate is subtropical: winters are mild, while summers are hot and humid with heavy monsoon rainfall from June to September. Average annual rainfall exceeds 2,000 mm, with July and August as the wettest months.

Economy and transport

Hetauda is one of Nepal’s important industrial centers, historically anchored by the Hetauda Industrial District and nearby factories. Its strategic position on the East–West (Mahendra) Highway and Tribhuvan Highway makes it a key transport hub linking Kathmandu with the southern plains and the Indian border.

Several new road projects, including the Kathmandu–Terai Fast Track and the Kathmandu–Kulekhani–Hetauda tunnel highway, aim to cut travel time to the capital significantly and further boost trade and mobility.

Culture, landmarks, and tourism

Hetauda is known for clean, tree-lined streets and was recognized among Nepal’s cleanest cities in the mid-2010s.

Notable attractions include:

  • Martyr’s Memorial Park (Sahid Smarak), honoring Nepal’s martyrs
  • Makwanpur Gadhi, a historic hilltop fort linked to the Sen dynasty
  • Religious sites such as Bhutandevi Temple, Banaskhandi Temple, and Gumba Danda’s monasteries

The surrounding hills, rivers, and nearby viewpoints make the city a base for short hikes, picnics, and nature tourism.

Administrative role and development

Hetauda is the permanent capital of Bagmati Province and seat of the provincial government, giving it growing political and administrative importance.

Urban expansion, industrial growth, and infrastructure projects—such as the emerging Gauritar International Cricket Stadium—are reshaping the city’s regional role while raising planning and environmental management challenges for the future.
